I hope you draw strength form her message as I did:
I got this message last week form a former client of Fire Eye Fitness. She was someone that made incredible progress while exercising with us at Fire Eye Fitness. As time passed and life changed for her and she gradually had to move on with life. I still think of her often and it really made my day when I received her message.
I hope you draw strength form her message as I did:
I have been thinking of you a lot lately. I hope you are doing well. From Facebook it looks like you have discovered a bit more balance in your life. So happy for you!
My first time kickboxing was in a dojo like the ones you see in the movies. Not well lite, old equipment kind of a rough crowd. I can’t say that I enjoyed it much the first 6 months because I was just beginning to learn what to do, how to do it... and then there was getting hit and kicked also. I have since studied many martial arts and had similar, although not as intense, experiences. I knew each time that things would get better eventually so I stuck it out. After 6 months to a year kickboxing did become a lot of fun, but it did take awhile to get there.
When I decided to have a Kickboxing/Boxing class at Fire Eye Fitness I wanted to bring only the most fun and calorie burning exercises and drills from my experience. The class was to get fit and not be ready for a fight so this idea has worked very well. Using the jab, cross, hook and uppercut to create lots of functional punching combinations; as well as adding elbows once the class feels comfortable with some footwork. It wouldn’t be Kickboxing with out kicks… roundhouse and jab kick are the mainstays. I substituted fitness exercises for air boxing; I wanted to use focus mitts and tia-pads so clients would be engaged with a partner rather than staring at a heavy bag for an hour. I did not want to take the intensity away, I always felt that focused intensity was an essential part of kickboxing. Often I will explain the combination that the class is doing in a context of how it is used in the ring or street to keep the intensity in classes.
The instruction and engagement is where I wanted Fire Eye Fitness to separate itself from the rest of the fitness boxing gyms. Lots of interaction with the instructor and with your partner. Partners workout together increases the number of drills and combinations that the instructor can create for each class and adds to the enjoyment of the class.
Kickboxing is a fantastic workout! Your get a incredible amount of cardio (burning calories). Your strength will dramatically increase from all the punches, kicks, elbows etc. that you are throwing in class. You are building lean strong muscles; we use functional fitness not vanity muscles. People who kickbox have a physique that catches your eye. Their tone arms, strong shoulders and good posture set them apart from the crowd.
The best part is that you are focusing your attention during the fighting drills etc. Kickboxing forces you to pay attention to what you are doing. If you have had a rough day… it melts away the stress. Nothing can top doing a 100’s punches and kicks to take away the stresses of the day. Everyone leaves class with a sweaty smile.

I started attending Bootcamp classes two and half years ago. Achieving fabulous success with building strength and endurance.
Then August of last year, I decided to train for my sixth marathon. It had been six years since my previous race and I was unsure my body could handle the rigorous training schedule considering my extensive work travel. I decided to enlist Todd Beatie's help. He suggested one weekly personal training session in addition to my bootcamp classes.
I have to admit, I was skeptical when he said I could train for the 26.2 miles with doing only three weekly training runs. But I gave it a shot! After a small injury setback, traveling almost every week for four months, and a serious head cold the week of the race, I did it! Finished the Honolulu Marathon with a respectable time of 4:13. It wasn't my best time ever, but with my challenging lifestyle it was fantastic! And to clearly illustrate the success of his training, I went on an six mile hike two days after the race. That never would have been possible with all the post-race soreness prior to working with Todd.
It wouldn't have been possible without Todd's assistance, coaching and support. Thank you, Todd!
Today, Megan shares how Fire Eye Fitness took her from barely running a 5k to competing annually in the Muncie 70.3 Ironman.
“When I first walked through the doors of Fire Eye Fitness, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the class, the trainer or even of myself. I had neglected my fitness for quite some time and to get myself ‘back on track’ I decided I needed ‘something different’ and Fire Eye Fitness seemed to be the only place in Indy that offered boxing classes for the ‘average Jane’.
At that time, I had one 5k race under my belt from about a decade earlier, I had no idea what an ‘Ironman’ was and definitely didn’t know what the heck an OCR (obstacle course race) comprised of. Further, I didn’t consider myself much of an athlete. If you had told me at that time that in just a few short years I would successfully complete countless competitive races ranging from half marathons, to obstacle course races, including the Spartan World Championship, as well as two Ironman 70.3 competitions, I wouldn’t have believed you and definitely wouldn’t have believed that I was capable of achieving such feats.
That was then. Then I met Todd Beattie. Through training with Todd and attending his classes at Fire Eye Fitness, I began to realize that I AM an athlete and the sky is the limit to what I am capable of achieving.
What I have discovered from Fire Eye Fitness and from training with Todd is far more than the ‘something different’ I was initially in search of.”
Through training with Todd, I have achieved an entirely new level of fitness.
As an accomplished athlete himself, Todd knows that the challenges of competitive racing and that the months of endless training are much more than physical challenges. He knows what it’s like to have to juggle work, family, training and life in general and that in order to achieve greatness on the course, you must learn to train the entire athlete, physical, mental and emotional.
How and when I ‘decide’ to take on my first Ironman 70.3 is still somewhat of a mystery, however, I do know Todd had a heavy hand in introducing me to Ironman and convincing me it was something worth my while. But what convinced me more than anything to take on this physical feat was the fact that I had a trainer in Todd, who not only was willing to work with me every step of the way, he also believed in me. That was the spark that ignited a passion for endurance sports and has put me on the road to continue to challenge myself and fine the ‘something different’ in physical fitness as well as in life.
Through mental breakdowns, PR’s, bad training days, days of major gains and even injuries, Todd’s training approach keeps you AND your head in the game. He is with you every mile along the way. He literally was with my the last mile of Ironman Muncie 70.3 in 2014 when during the last mile of the run, he caught up to me pushed me through to the finish line and to a new course PR by nearly 15 minutes!
I continue to grow as a person physically, emotionally and mentally. Each year my training improves, my knowledge base for endurance sports multiplies and I learn to train smarter as I continually challenge myself. None of this would have been possible with out Downtown Boot Camp and Todd Beattie as my trainer. He has provided me with a training base and a direction that has propelled my trajectory.
I am currently preparing to take on my first Ironman in Lousiville. My journey will be long and full of highs and lows, but as I embark on this journey training for close to a year to prepare myself to take on 140.6 miles, I know I have a trainer and friend in Todd. On those tough training days, which are sure to be expected, where I questions why I am doing this or if I even can, I am reminded that not only do I have a strong training base from working with Todd but also his support and that of the entire Downtown Boot Camp family and that their belief in me is often enough to get me through that tough swim, bike or ride.
You never know, until you TRI!!! We’ll see you at Ironman Muncie 70.3 again in 2015! “
This week we have the pleasure of sharing another Downtown Boot Camp Success Story. Jackie came to Downtown Boot Camp already in pretty good shape but was looking for something to take her to the next level and achieve the “perfect wedding body”. Like Krissy, Jackie ended up with so much more. Thanks for sharing your testimonial with us, Jackie!
After moving back to Indianapolis in January of 2014, I immediately joined a gym. However, I noticed that I was not getting the results that I wanted. I could clearly see my metabolism had slowed. I needed more than just running on a treadmill, and was bored of the same old, overcrowded gyms. I found Downtown Boot Camp and Boxing Classes. A bit apprehensive; I originally joined Todd’s boxing class, not knowing anything about the sport. Within a few weeks my endurance was way higher than it had been in over a year, I had learned more than just the basics of boxing, and I could tell some drastic changes to my arms, shoulders, and back. Although I was looking and feeling great, I had recently gotten engaged and wanted to look beautiful and feel confident. A month before the Big Day, I started going to both the Boot Camp and Boxing Classes. I wish I had been going to both classes all along!
I could see tone definition in muscles I hadn’t seen since before college!
I felt great, was making healthier food choices, and was feeling more confident then I had in a long time. I felt and looked fabulous for my wedding day!
With Todd’s help of cardiovascular and strength training workouts I was able to achieve my perfect wedding body for my perfect wedding dress. Now looking back at my wedding pictures, I have Todd and Downtown Bootcamp and Boxing Classes to thank for my body transformation! Within the past year I have lost 10 pounds, all while gaining lean muscle. My clothes fit so much better, and I have even gone down a pants size. I continue to enjoy Downtown Boot Camp and Boxing Classes! Thank you, Todd!
